HELPING TO KEEP THE CAMPUS SAFE

This year sees the start of what will be the UK’s biggest ever Crimestoppers initiative – Campus Watch.

Campus Watch is a joint enterprise which has been developed over the last 12 months between West Yorkshire Police, Bradford College and Bradford University, with additional input from students.

At the heart of the activity, which is intended to create a safer environment for staff and students, is a range of new contact points for people to report incidents, express their concerns or seek advice.

Communication methods now include e-mailing and texting as well as traditional telephone contact – partly to allow for information being left with the police anonymously.

Bradford College Security Manager Mark Hirst, jointly responsible for the scheme’s development, said: “We’re sure Campus Watch will be welcomed by staff and students alike. We’ll be monitoring the situation closely, and we’re anxious for feedback so that we can amend the scheme, as necessary, over the coming months.”

Additional steps to improve security include better CCTV coverage around the College and regular patrols by City Centre Wardens and police Community Support Officers.

Contact details for Campus Watch will be prominently displayed throughout the College and surrounding areas and made available to individuals on handy reference cards.
